this hour on the massacre of the school in newtown, connecticut. 20 children and six adults were killed and the lone gunman took his own life. i understand we are learn something new details about the gunman, adam lanza, and his family. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good afternoon. we are starting to put together some of the pieces of the p s te puz i will. adam lanza was home schooled. he has been described by students who -- when he did go to school, classmates of him, as very intelligent and as we have often heard in these cases, also described as loner. someone that didn't have a lot of friends. went out of his way not to be noticed, of course, he couldn't have changed that in a more devastating way than he did by going into that elementary school. his aunt, who has not seen him since he was 3 years old, spoke just within the last hour to local reporters in north carolina. here is what she had to say about adam. >> he was different. he was quiet. nice kid. good kid. he was challenging the family in that house. never in trouble with the law. never in trouble with anything. >> sh

news. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett tonight. in newtown, connecticut, it is the scene of one of the worst school shootings in the history of the united states and we can report for you that police have now identified a school shooter as adam lanza. a shooter who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police

. i'm wolf blitzer, reporting here from newtown, connecticut. let's bring in our national correspondent, susan candiotti. she is joining us with more information, the very latest on the investigation, what are you learning, susan? >> reporter: hi, wolf, we're not going to dwell on the shooter's name, but he is twenty-year-old adam lanza, and we're learning today more on how vicious the attacks were. this information coming to us from the chief medical examiner. >> all the wounds that i know of at this point were caused by the weapon. i only did seven of the autopsies. the victims i had ranged from three to eleven, and i only saw two of them with close range shooting. this is a sample, i really don't have more information. the bullets are designed in such a fashion that the energy -- this is very clinical, i shouldn't be saying this. but the energy deposited in the tissue, so the bullet stays in. >> reporter: now the long weapon that the chief medical examiner referred to is one of the three guns that our sources tell us were found next to the shooter in the classroom. you'

for the outpouring of support that they have felt here in newtown from all the people around the country and around the world who have been making their condolences well known. and of course we're also going to keep talking about the issue of gun control in the country, for the second day in a role. we' -- in a row. we're hearing president obama call for meaningful action. it's unclear what exactly that would mean. white house correspondent brianna keilar is at the white house for us. lay out there for me, you have pointed out that the president himself has not done much on the issue of gun control. so what are the expectations of what meaningful action could specifically mean? >> reporter: well, gun control advocates, soledad, think that it should mean further gun legislation. they want to see action taken. the thing, though, is it's unclear exactly what president obama means by what he said yesterday in the briefing room, and he reiterated today in his weekly address. he wants to see meaningful action. if you go by his past, in 2008 while he was campaigning, he said he wanted to see a renewal of

here in the newtown, connecticut area. the father is divorced from nancy lanza. she is the mother of the two who is a school teacher and counted among the dead. her body was found in a residence here in the newtown area, as well. believe it or not, piers, the weapons according to authorities were owned by the mother, nancy lanza in this case. not by the shooter. still trying to piece together a motive. there signs we are hearing for our sources that the shooter may have suffered from some kind of personality disorder. did he leave notes behind? did he tell anyone what he was planning to do? among the many questions that we all have tonight. >> thank you very much indeed. i want to turn to ashleigh banfield. she's in newtown, connecticut, as well. i was watching when you were speaking to wolf blitzer and you became very emotional. two of your children went to school in connecticut and you were not sure what was happening with them. thankfully, they were okay. but this is every parent's nightmare. from what we understand the bodies of still lying there on what the police are calling

and trauma is going to last for years and for some of these families, forever. the community of newtown is, it's doing its best, as we heard a few moments ago, it's doing its best to heal. but what can be done to help the young children and families involved in yesterday's horrific shootings? joining me now from washington, d.c., psychiatrist dr. josh weiner. dr. weiner, i want to start with something that we've been talking about off and on throughout the past couple of hours here. gun control, obviously that is going to be a discussion that is had in washington, d.c., hopefully over the next few weeks and months. but mental health in this country is not a topic that is discussed in public, at least, a great deal. how much of the conversation should be centered on that? >> to me, i think the conversation should actually start with focusing on the mental health aspect. if you want to fight crime and you want to fight the use of guns and violence, you need to start by mental health treatment. you need to improve the access to care that a lot of people have. you need to take a look at what's
